Osher (Andrew) Günsberg http://andrewgunsberg.com The continuing adventures of a Brisbane boy far from home, as told to the internets through words and pictures. On the Blog since 2003 posterous.com Wed, 23 May 2012 15:25:00 -0700 Good morning. Are you sitting down? Good. Because this will really bend your noodle. http://andrewgunsberg.com/good-morning-are-you-sitting-down-good-becaus http://andrewgunsberg.com/good-morning-are-you-sitting-down-good-becaus

"Think of an experience from your childhood. Something you remember clearly, something you can see, feel, maybe even smell, as if you were really there. After all, you really were there at the time, weren't you? How else would you remember it? But here is the bombshell: you weren't there. Not a single atom that is in your body today was there when that event took place. Every bit of you has been replaced many times over (which is why you eat, of course). You are not even the same shape as you were then. The point is that you are like a cloud: something that persists over long periods, while simultaneously being in flux. Matter flows from place to place and momentarily comes together to be you. Whatever you are, therefore, you are not the stuff of which you are made. If that doesn't make the hair stand up on the back of your neck, read it again until it does, because it is important."

I remember the idea of sailing away for weeks and weeks and over a year, far far away to the Land where the Wild Things Are played on my young mind powerfully. Too young to really understand that one day I would be in charge of my life and escape intense situations if I needed to, this story filled my mind with dreams of fleeing to a land of adventure and friendly monsters.

It also probably has a large amount to do with my penchant for collecting and hanging out in adult-size fuzzy monster suits - but that's a story for another couch thank you very much Sigmund.

RIP Maurice, thanks for the fantasies.

nerdy camera talk:

This was shot on the 1949 Graflex Graphic View II 4x5 monorail camera that arrived yesterday. Shot with a with a 210mm lens.
Getting used to exposure compensation when the bellows is extended, I'll have to experiment with the metering some more.

Fri, 04 May 2012 18:50:00 -0700 So I was crowd-surfing at a Beastie Boys gig dressed at a kangaroo, when MCA says... http://andrewgunsberg.com/so-i-was-crowd-surfing-at-a-beastie-boys-gig http://andrewgunsberg.com/so-i-was-crowd-surfing-at-a-beastie-boys-gig

Pinkroo_bboys
It was while I was watching TISM on stage at the 1998 Gold Coast Big Day Out that I knew my life would change. I sipped a rapidly warming XXXX and thought "I'd like to meet the Beastie Boys. I know, I'll get a job at Channel [v], and when they release their next album - then I'll interview them." That was it. I took another sip and sang along to the one about River Phoenix.

Well, the universe was listening.

Fifteen months later, only six weeks after starting my new gig at Channel [v] on By Demand - I interviewed the Beastie Boys. It has gone down in history as probably the worst interview I'd ever done as I had yet to figure out how to now go all fan-boy in front of people I worshipped, but I had manifested my destiny.

Fortunately, twice more I was able to interview them, and things went much - MUCH better.

And so in 2005, when one of my favourite bands ever was playing a show at the Hordern Pavillion in Sydney - once again the Beastie Boys came on for an interview.

We chatted a bit, there was some back and forth, and during a break - Adam asked if I was coming to the show that night. "Yes, and I will be coming in my pink Kangaroo suit".

He might have thought I was joking - but I had planned all along to wear it that night.

Cut to the gig, and the vibe was so thick that I broke my long-held no-pit policy. I hadn't been in a  pit since the Adelaide BDO in 1999 - but this was the Beastie Boys, and I was in my Pink Kangaroo Suit. I danced my arse off.

Mid-way through the show, the guys changed costume and came out to play a few tracks as a band (as opposed to just Mix Master Mike throwing massive beats behind them). More dancing ensued, when suddenly Mike D stopped mid-song, and said "Hey, is that a giant bunny rabbit?   There's a bunny rabbit in the crowd".

"Nah, man" croaked Adam "he's a Kangaroo".

"Do you want to come up and dance on stage?"

With that the crowd lifted me up and for the first and only time in my life I crowd surfed. You see, as an avid reader of the now-defunct Grand Royal magazine, according to them I was not a certified waif*, and therefore crowd surfing wasn't encouraged - and I have obliged that policy my whole gig-going life.

Across the supportive hands of the audience I was gently passed and into the arms of a colossal security guard that I happened to know, by the name of Tonka. He cradled me like a baby in his massive hands and asked if I wanted to go up.

In a moment of panic I declined, Tonka put me down, and I danced my way out of the pit and back to the front again.

At least a mate of mine who was side of stage managed to snap the picture you see above.

The Beastie Boys are a HUGE influence on me. Adam Yauch was a massive infulence on me as a bass player too. It is very, very sad that he has passed away. As a band, they paved the road that so many artists today walk on, without even so much as a tip of the hat.

RIP MCA. Because you can, you won't, and you don't stop.

Thu, 03 May 2012 17:32:00 -0700 You like photos? You'll like Norman Seeff. You'll also like that you can own one of his incredible prints for under $100. http://andrewgunsberg.com/you-like-photos-youll-like-norman-seeff-youll http://andrewgunsberg.com/you-like-photos-youll-like-norman-seeff-youll
Media_httpnormanseeff_kpqbv

This morning with two great mates, we trekked into the deepest darkest San Fernando Valley - as we had been granted an invitation to enter into the remarkable office/studio/archive of legendary photographer and director Norman Seeff.

To say that I walked away inspired would be such an understatement. I left there exhilarated.

Far beyond his exquisite and technically superior photography, is his work regarding exploration into the creative process.

A remarkable man - Norman had the foresight to not only photograph his subjects, but to have his assistants roll film (and later video) on the photo shoots. He doesn't just throw it into auto-focus and snap pictures willy nilly - he engages his subjects in intense and heart-opening conversation, working in and out of his diopter while fearlessly prying open their protective emotional layers, manually focusing with pin-sharp precision while getting them to open up about their deepest thoughts and feelings - and right when the emotional response is written in their eyes - click - he captures the truest essence of their souls, on 35mm film. And he's done this for over 400 shoots since 1975.

As someone who has made a living interviewing people for the better part of my career - I was completely humbled by his skill and ability - pummeled back into my box like Tyrion slapping Joffrey. His way with people, his willingness to push buttons and boundaries, to confidently ask his subjects to reveal parts of themselves they'd otherwise keep hidden - he is a true master at interviewing - yet this doesn't even begin to describe his photos.

After leafing through some of the enormous gallery prints hung on the walls (all blown up to around 4ft x 3ft from a 35mm neg!) we were ushered into a back room where Norman himself was working on editing some footage for the upcoming exhibit "Who Shot Rock 'n Roll" at the Annenberg Space for Photography here in LA. Instantly you could sense his warmth, his intelligence and his aura in the room. We only spent a short while with him, after which he invited us to sit in his edit bay to peruse some footage of his photo shoots over the years -including a longer version of this session with Ray Charles..

If I ever question what it is that I love about photographing or interviewing people, you're welcome to slap me upside the head with a giant reel of that footage. I am so grateful to do what I do for a living, even if it is a teeny tiny itsy bitsy fraction of the size of what Norman does.

Norman has opened up selections of his remarkable archive for sale, at very reasonable prices. The link is below - I picked out Steve Martin, and the photo here of Steve Jobs, among others.

Now if you don't mind - I'm off to load some film holders and pack my camera bag..

Always-on/always-on-you devices provide three powerful fantasies: that we will always be heard; that we can put our attention wherever we want it to be; and that we never have to be alone. Indeed our new devices have turned being alone into a problem that can be solved.

From The New York Times:

OPINION: The Flight From Conversation

We use technology to keep one another at distances we can control: not too close, not too far, just right: the Goldilocks effect.

I have been following Tavi Gevinson for years now.

Since the first time that I saw Style Rookie just a few weeks after it began, my mind was blown away as to how smart, funny, brilliant and charming she seemed.

I remember relentlessly hassling a friend who's an editor at a magazine in Australia at the time - telling her how HUGE this kid was going to grow up to be.

My opinion was only based on what she wrote, and the photos that she took.

I had never heard her talk, until today.

You know how sometimes I worry about the world?

With humans like Tavi walking around inspiring others, I think we might just make it.

Tavi turns 16 in three days, is the editor of her own online magazine, sits front row at NY Fashion week, and as you can see below - is just lovely and charming and smart and wonderful.

If I had met someone who talked like this when I was sixteen, I think my head would have exploded. Lucky I've a few years on my side now.

This talk is mostly aimed at women, but if you're a straight guy in your teenage years - listen hard to what she's saying.

She is describing the strange creature that you will persue until to your last day on this earth - the human female. Thank you for being you Tavi Gevinson.

Coachella 2012: Azealia Banks has arrived

Banks-coachella

One thing Azealia Banks needed to prove when she walked onstage for her Saturday afternoon set at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival -– her first official gig in the U.S. -- was how deserving she is of the massive hype that’s been thrown her way.

Since her introduction into the post-Nicki Minaj world of female rap through the deliciously profane firecracker of an anthem, “212,” the Harlem spitfire has become a major darling on rap and indie blogs that have grown disenchanted with Minaj’s syrupy pop hits. This without a barrage of tracks, as evidenced by a set that ended 20 minutes earlier than expected.

COACHELLA 2012 | Full coverage

With a black-and-white-striped two-piece jumper and long purple-black tresses, Banks immediately proved why thousands of Coachella-goers had lined up for choice vantage points well over 30 minutes before her scheduled set time.

She was four bars into her single "... up the Fun” when she flexed just how skillful her rhymes were: precise, full of grit and wholly original in a way that can't be learned or rehearsed, despite what a few of the new ladies (er, Kreayshawn) on the scene might think.

Her set conjured up a sweet era of mid-'90s rap when under-appreciated fem-cees like Foxy Brown, Da Brat, Charli Baltimore and Rah Digga along with singular forces like Missy Elliott, Lauryn Hill, Queen Latifah and, yes, even Lil Kim, represented the girl who got down, dirty and raunchy but never dived too deeply into the waters of pop in search of hits.

And it seemed that Banks herself has grown tired of the fixation on pop rap. Her brand is unapologetically street -- even when she ventures into the dance world, it's less Euro discotheque and more gentlemen’s club bounce. And when she experiments with singing, like she did on a brief a capella take on the Zutons classic "Valerie," her voice proved a bit more elastic than her peers', making you briefly wonder what she might have learned from Ms. Hill.

Listen to the rawness of “Barbie …” and you can't help but think she's issuing a few shots at the new crop of girls arriving in today’s more image-conscious female terrain where natural hair colors and designer duds aren't enough. “Long weave, lipstick, I be on that barbie …, pretty in the face but a … look plastic,” went one barbed lyric.

With a smile and makeup running down her face after she effortlessly delivered bar after bar, Banks knew she had earned the ultimate co-sign: thousands of cheers.

If that wasn’t enough, she sent the crowd into chaos when her DJ spun “212,” signaling one of the most profane choruses likely to be sung in unison since Cee-Lo Green’s  hit “ … You.” Judging by the amount of fans who had the most biting (and unprintable) of her lyrics printed on T-shirts and hats, Nicki should be on the lookout.
